Like most people I'd glanced at a few Gary Larson cartoons in magazines, but it wasn't until I saw this collection of his cartoons all together in one book that I realised just what an inventive and incredible mind he has and wondered what would have happened if he'd decided to be a writer or stand-up comedian instead of a cartoonist. It could've changed the whole history of comedy. In his cartoons are the originality and quality of ideas that don't often find their way onto TV, Radio or the Stage. Eddie Izzard has mentioned how he was influenced by Gary Larson and it's easy to make comparisons because they both use similar subjects (such as animals) as inspiration, but there are pages and pages of line drawings in this book which tell their own very funny, bizarre stories of a world that is like nowhere else ever - there are murderous squirrels, sheep driving cars, trees that dance, table tennis playing cowboys, moles in the Garden of Eden, cavemen inventing chess and, best of all, ahem...a chicken suspended from a balloon that is floating through the doorway of a Samurai bar (you have to SEE it really...honest, page 36 is a killer!).

Oh yes, squirrels have everything - they're funny and have amazing memories as well. If only they could drive they'd be the best taxi drivers on the planet.

The book should be easy to get hold of, Gary Larson's also produced lots of other cartoon collections such as The Far Side, Night of The Crash Test Dummies, The Chickens Are Restless, Unnatural Selections, Bride of The Far Side, Hound of The Far Side and Weiner Dog Art (which has a copy of a Salvadore Dali pic involving dachshunds and a totally daft sort of Cezanne still life with, erm,...dachshunds! ) which are also worth checking out, they even have a few zoo keepers and jungle explorers here and there ;)
